The Journeyman Electrician is a licensed electrician who has completed classroom hours and on the job training hours prior to passing the state licensing exam. The Journeyman Electrician is a field employee who follows the lead of, and works alongside, the Project Foreman or works alone. Required Certifications and Licenses:
- OSHA 10 certificate
- Valid Massachusetts Journeyman license; must be maintained and renewed
- Valid driver’s license
- GED or high school diploma
- 4 years of previous on-the-job electrical experience
Essential Functions:
- Assembles, installs, tests, and maintains electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, fixtures, and fire alarm systems
- Uses hand tools and power tools to accomplish designated tasks
- Troubleshoots malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components; locates the cause of a breakdown and corrects the problem
- Connects wires to circuit breakers, transformers, networks, or other components ensuring compatibility torqued to manufacturer’s specifications
- Connects conductors to switches, receptacles or appliances with proper methods of splicing and taping
- Inspects electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and needs for adjustment or repair
- Ensures compliance with most up to date electrical code
- Bends conduit using hydraulic and hand benders
- Pulls wires keeping them free from kinks or abrasion
- Engineers electrical plan and make the blueprint for the customer’s approval, as needed
- Adjusts and reengineers plans and as-builts
- Directs and trains workers to install, maintain or repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures
- Installs ground leads and connects power cables to equipment, such as motors
- Installs branch circuits and feeders using conduit, MC, NMB type cables
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Offers guidance to apprentices and journeymen electricians with less experience
- Directs and trains workers to install, maintain or repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures
- Leads an area of a project, such as lighting, gear, or fire alarm, and the crew assigned to complete that task
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Ability to use a variety of tools and equipment, including power tools
- Ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and roofs to complete tasks from demolition to installation, among others
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
- Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner
- Ability to read, understand, analyze blueprints and schematic drawings
- Ability to communicate technical information
- Ability to follow directions and decipher technical information
- Ability to complete work in a neat, safe, and professional manner
- Knowledge of, and ability in, pipe bending, circuit wiring, feeders, services, fire alarm, wire pulling, underground, wiring electrical equipment, troubleshooting
- Team player with the willingness and ability to learn and work with others
